EXCLUSSIVE : Dermot Gallagher delivers a ‘very interesting’ viewpoint on big Celtic

In Celtic’s draw with Rangers, VAR once again played a significant role, affecting another match involving the Parkhead club. Former SFA Grade 1 referee Steve Conroy expressed his opinion that John Beaton should not have changed his decision from a yellow card for diving to awarding a penalty after Fabio Silva’s actions. This decision proved pivotal, sparking Rangers’ comeback from 2-0 down.

However, former FIFA referee Dermot Gallagher seems to disagree with Conroy. While many pundits and former players have criticized the penalty decision, Gallagher believes it was the correct call. He argues against the notion that Alistair Johnston should have received a second yellow card for the incident.

According to Gallagher, when reviewing the footage, it becomes apparent that Johnston’s action of lifting his leg resulted in contact with Silva’s knee, warranting a penalty. This creates a dilemma for the referee, especially under pressure, as it intensifies the situation.

All the Celtic manager needs to do is ensure he wins the remaining six games of the season and then the title remains at Parkhead.

If he can do that then future VAR decisions will not have any bearing on who becomes crowned the Scottish Premiership champions come the end of the season.
