During the international break, two football stars made headlines due to concerns about their fitness and future performances as they prepare to return to their respective clubs in the Premiership.

Celtic expressed concern over the minutes played by their player, Luis Palma, while he was on international duty with Honduras. Reports suggest Celtic asked the Honduran FA to limit his time on the pitch, particularly because of the artificial surface at the General Francisco Morazan Stadium in San Pedro Sula, which could potentially harm Palma’s fitness. Despite being Honduras’ star player, Palma was brought on only in the 63rd minute during the home leg of their Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal, after being lightly used by Celtic this season with just one league start and three substitute appearances. Palma had a memorable moment earlier in the week, scoring twice after coming off the bench in the first leg, but he struggled with the high-altitude conditions in the return leg in Mexico. Honduras’ coach, Reinaldo Rueda, took Palma off at halftime in Toluca (2,600 meters above sea level) due to his difficulty with the altitude, leading to a 4-0 loss and elimination from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Kasper Schmeichel, the Danish goalkeeper, received praise from Serbia’s coach, Dragan Stojkovic, after another strong performance in his country’s international match. Schmeichel, who plays for Celtic, is expected to be a key part of Denmark’s World Cup campaign, even at the age of 40, according to former international Mads Junker.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper received widespread praise after making several crucial saves for Denmark in their 0-0 draw with Serbia in Belgrade. Serbian legend and current coach, Stojkovic, acknowledged Schmeichel’s performance, stating, “He made several key saves for Denmark. He is the goalkeeper he is for a reason, and he had a big night, unfortunately for us.”

Schmeichel has been supported to continue playing for his country until the next World Cup, when he will be 40, further adding to his 111 caps. Former Denmark player and TV pundit Junker remarked, “There’s no reason to suggest Schmeichel shouldn’t remain our first-choice goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. It’s absurd to even question it.”

“As long as he stays fit, he should be our goalkeeper, and if we qualify for the 2026 World Cup, he’ll be there. Time and again, he provides the reliability we need. We can trust him to make the saves he needs to. He’s also vital for his leadership, communication, and body language, which greatly helps the defenders play their game.”
