Luton Town – A Gamble That Failed As Hatters Crash To A Heavy Defeat

Yesterday, Rob Edwards surprised us all with his team selection including Osho and Lokonga in his starting XI.

I say surprised us all because in his pre-match press conference, he kept his cards close to his breast, implying that none of his injured players, other than Mengi, would be available.

Now, I seem to recall the gaffer implying a few weeks ago that, given our protracted relegation battle, he might have to take a risk or two to impact our fate.

It was always going to be risky, especially because each of our last five games was touted as a cup final.

Unfortunately, with high expectations heading into the game, Brentford proved to be the ultimate party poopers, capitalising on what I would describe as our worst performance of the season.

Despite the usual enthusiastic support, which turned Kenilworth Road into a cacophony of noise, the Hatters simply failed to get going; it was almost as if the previous weeks’ efforts had sucked the energy levels out of the players.

Once Brentford had opened up a two-goal lead, it was always going to be a question of how many they scored; in fact, I was relieved they only scored five!

Playing Osho and Lokonga simply didn’t work; neither appeared totally fit, and as a result, the team’s performance plummeted.

I said before the game that the Hatters would need 10 points from their final five games; I still believe that is the true, but we now need to pull off a miracle escape to win three and draw one of those last four games.

It is not impossible, but it is, in my opinion, quite unlikely!
