‘Fascinating’ – Simon Jordan shares promotion verdict after Leeds v Middlesbrough

Simon Jordan has shared his view that the promotion race in the Championship is “fascinating” after Leeds United beat Middlesbrough 4-3 at the Riverside.

Jordan explained that, if Ipswich manage to win against Hull on 27 April, both contenders for automatic promotion will have made strong statements of intent.

He then insisted that promotion remains up for grabs, although it was hinted that Southampton were no longer in the running after their surprise defeat against Cardiff on Saturday (20 April).

Speaking live on talkSPORT [23 April], Jordan shared: “I think you’re going to find out if Ipswich beat Hull away, that will be a statement of intent equally as big as Leeds’.

“If Ipswich lay that flag down, they put themselves into a very good position. I think it’s a really good result Leeds got last night because they haven’t been in the greatest form.

“They’ve gone and scored four goals against a difficult Middlesbrough side that aren’t playing for very much but were playing in front of their home fans.

“I think there are too many permutations. Southampton, I was surprised they got beat at the weekend given their momentum. I think it’s really up for grabs, it’s fascinating. What more could you want?”

Leeds United fighting for promotion after win v Middlesbrough

The win against Middlesbrough at the Riverside means Leeds have leapfrogged Ipswich into second place, at least in the short term with one more game played, putting the pressure on their rivals to replicate their result.

With just three points separating the top three teams as things stand, the possibility is clear that one of the teams will have to drop into the playoffs – something Leeds will want to avoid after their history in the knockout competition.

Leicester are set to host Southampton at the King Power on 23 April, handing them the opportunity to move four points clear and, with two games left to play, establish themselves as the leaders with the title likely going their way.

Leeds’ form since the turn of the year suggests they will be confident heading into the final games, but Ipswich hold the cards as things stand, knowing that if they win the rest of their games this season, they will be promoted to the Premier League.
