Stockport County midfielder could be answer to John Bostock’s Notts County departure

The Hatters midfielder was one of eight players released by the club at the start of May

As the Magpies attempt to improve on their mid-table place from this season, Notts County will be hard at work getting ready for another season in League Two.

Notts had a promising start to the season, finishing in the play-off spots at the beginning of the new year. However, their success has since waned and may have been related to Luke Williams’ January transfer to Swansea City, since their form had begun to emerge in the later half of his spell.

As he gets ready for his first full season at the Meadow Lane helm, Stuart Maynard will be free to bring in the players he feels will assist enhance the East Midlands club. He was able to calm the ship.

Transfers, both within and beyond the club, will play a significant role in the planning process. A midfielder from Stockport County would also be of interest to Richard Montague as he and owners Christoffer and Alexander Reedtz begin a busy season of recruitment. This is because clubs throughout the Football League have announced their retained lists.

Ben Croasdale in action for Stockport County

Ryan Croasdale, who joined the Hatters in 2020, played a crucial role in Stockport’s ascent from the National League to League One.

The midfielder, who has played for the team for 178 games, was informed, along with striker Paddy Madden, that they were surplus to requirements after their contracts expired.

From his 2021 arrival at Edgeley Park, Croasdale has been a consistent presence under Dave Challinor, starting in all 44 league games during their season of promotion from the fifth division.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who was born in Lancaster, has shown this season that he still has a lot to offer and will undoubtedly be a target for many League Two teams. Notts County is one possible destination in the summer.

Even though Matty Palmer will be joining the first team again in the upcoming weeks, and the Magpies have midfield options in Scott Robertson, Dan Crowley, and Sam Austin, Croasdale would be a welcome addition, especially in light of the club’s retained list.

National League - Wrexham v Notts County

After their contracts at Meadow Lane expired at the end of the previous month, the team announced that six players would be leaving. Aidan Stone, Will Randall, and Luther Munakandafa were free to look for possibilities outside of the East Midlands.

Two additional key players were let go by the team, even though the retained list indicated that Maynard’s priority was on strengthening the defence by releasing Aden Baldwin, Connell Rawlinson, Richard Brindley, and Tobi Adebayo.

John Bostock and Jim O’Brien have been essential to the Magpies’ development in recent years, and they will be crucial in helping them win back their Football League status in the 2022–2023 season.

The effect the two had on the players as well as the supporters was evident. After it was announced that Bostock was leaving Meadow Lane, Jodi Jones and Dan Crowley sent meaningful comments for him on social media.

Along with leaving behind enormous characters in the locker room, the two also leave behind the experience required to take on the division—something Croasdale might offer should he decide to transfer to the East Midlands come summertime.

In Madden’s absence, the 29-year-old captained the team 17 times while he was at Stockport, demonstrating the leadership abilities that the team would require coming into the upcoming campaign.

And considering the players that make up Notts’ roster, that can only be a plus after being a key member of a team that won the title this season.

Maynard will be eager to bolster Croasdale’s skill set during his first window managing arrivals at Meadow Lane. Croasdale can play both a possession-based brand of football and be a combative midfield option for the Magpies.

The magnitude of Notts County and the positive vibe surrounding the team at the moment are a big draw and could entice Croasdale to sign a contract with the Magpies in the summer, even though the former Stockport midfielder won’t be short of options.
