Time to go: Wolves must finally banish their big flop who earns more than Hwang & Neto

He’s been underperforming while away from Molineux on loan.

The 2023–24 season has been going well for the Wolverhampton Wanderers thus far. Many people predicted that Gary O’Neil’s team would be relegated this season, but they have exceeded all predictions and may place in the top half of the Premier League standings.

Yes, Wolves haven’t always had an easy time of it. They lost two key midfield players in the summer transfer window, to start. After leaving the team to join Al-Hilal, Ruben Neves sold for a club record £47 million. Matheus Nunes, who departed the team for £53 million on deadline day, broke the club record that Neves had established weeks earlier, was the next to depart.

In addition, O’Neil must deal with the injuries sustained by a few of his top players. Pedro Neto, a winger for Portugal, is presently out of action due to a hamstring strain. This is his second injury of the season, and he has missed 21 games thus far. A hamstring ailment also kept Matheus Cunha out of action for 12 weeks, but he is finally back in the game.

All things considered, Wolves has performed admirably this year. O’Neil and his team will have to make a significant choice about a player who is currently out on loan and is expected to return to the team in the summer, though, as the transfer window approaches.

The stats from Fabio Silva’s season

The man in question is Portuguese striker Fabio Silva, who is with Rangers in Scotland on loan right now. The young player, who is currently on his third loan in only two seasons, has had a difficult season at Ibrox.

With just 22 games played, the 21-year-old has only netted five goals for the 55-time Scottish League champions. Despite playing for Wolves for the first part of the season, he has only been on loan since January and hasn’t really made much of an impression while he’s been north of the border.

With 10 goals in just 19 appearances for Portugal U21s, he is undoubtedly a talented goal striker, but he has not yet translated that skill to the Wolves or Rangers clubs.

Silva has spent the previous two seasons on loan at PSV and Anderlecht. He played in 32 games in Belgium during the first half of the season, tallying 11 goals and four assists, while he played in 19 games in the Netherlands, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists.

The pay of Fabio Silva in 2024

Silva’s present contract at Ibrox is likely to expire, so the Old Gold will undoubtedly need to make a decision over his future this summer. In fact, it could be wise to let him go given his goal-scoring record both at Molineux and on his several trips abroad.

In addition, he makes a lot more money than several Wolves players combined. Silva is presently paid £80,000 per week, as per FBref. That is more than the likes of Cunha and Neto, who each make £50k a week, and Hwang Hee-chan, who makes £70k a week, according to Capology.

The only person who makes more than the 21-year-old is Pablo Sarabia. At £90k a week, the Spaniard is the highest paid player at Wolves; the only other player who makes as much is Nelson Semedo.

Silva makes a lot of money every week, and considering his poor performance in front of goal, selling him this summer would be the wisest move. But Wolves will be fortunate to get back a large portion of the £35.6 million they paid for the striker. He was the club’s record signing at the time.

Nevertheless, even with that, it will be significant money taken out of the payroll and additional cash for O’Neil to use this summer as he attempts to build on a strong debut season leading Molineux.
