BREAKING NEWS: Celtic Invincible In Limbo

The 32-year-old midfielder, who quit the champions in a £7million switch to Southampton in July 2018, is out of contract next month.

Russell Martin, boss of the south coast club, insists there will be no new deals discussed until after the weekend’s Championship Play-Off Final against Leeds United.

Armstrong missed the 3-1 aggregate semi-final win over Mikey Johnston’s West Brom with a hamstring injury and will be on the sidelines at Wembley on Sunday.

The Inverness-born playmaker’s chances of getting the nod for Steve Clarke’s Scotland Euro squad for Germany next month are now in the balance while there are question marks over his future at St Mary’s.

Ronny Deila signed Armstrong along with Gary Mackay-Steven from Dundee United for £2million in January 2015 and the stylish middle-of-the-park performer became a pivotal figure in Brendan Rodgers’ unbeaten and all-conquering team of season 2016/17.

It was the midfielder who scored the crucial quickfire equaliser in the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen on May 27 2017 to wipe out Jonny Hayes’ opener for the Pittodrie side.

And, of course, Tom Rogic took centre stage when he claimed the memorable last-gasp winner in the dramatic encounter to seal a historic crusade.

Armstrong won his 50th cap in Scotland’s 1-0 home loss to Northern Ireland in the friendly in March and could now be struggling to get a place in the Euro squad which will be announced on Wednesday.
The Scots will kick off the tournament against hosts Germany at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena on Friday June 14.
Armstrong will be hoping to be involved – and to have his club future settled by the time the game takes place.
