LATEST: Celtic and the Fraser Forster transfer option

Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster looks on during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between St Johnstone and Celtic at McDiarmid Park on March 01...

To be clear, Celtic hasn’t even mentioned links with Forster recently, but given the club’s ongoing need for a new top scorer, it’s possible that his name will come up for discussion for a variety of reasons.

On a hypothetical Forster comeback, Neil Lennon has already provided commentary.

In a perfect world, Celtic would sign a young goalie who has potential to be sold; yet, with Hart’s approaching departure, the team would be lacking experience, and it might be necessary to fill the gap in the summer to keep the dressing room balanced.

Forster has experience in this area, having won eight trophies in his two stints in Glasgow, which is a desirable attribute for Rodgers to have in a stopper.

In spite of this, Neil Lennon recently alluded to the issue of his lack of playing time while talking about the possibility of him returning to the scene of his former glory.

“Joe is leaving, Matt is (possibly) leaving,” Lennon said. “They were the two most reliable players this season.” Celtic needs to look at a truly good number one, and they have some work ahead of them in that regard. I know from my own experience that’s where you build your greatest teams; Fraser Forster was a valuable asset.

When asked if he thought Forster would return, he went on, saying, “He might be.” I’m not sure if he would return a third time. We’ll see. It would be intriguing.

This summer, Celtic must make judgements about transfers.

Celtic must find a Hart substitute as soon as the summer transfer window opens in order to avoid starting preseason without giving their new goalie, whichever they choose, time to get used to playing.

The Bhoys will surely be debating a long list of choices internally, and it’s more probable that they want to draw in a player with a lot of distribution to go along with their shot-blocking prowess.

In any case, Rodgers needs to find a new last line of defence before the upcoming season, so if Forster is available, you should keep an eye on his name should the right situation arise.
