Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey will not play in the final game, according to Scotland’s assistant manager John Carver. Additionally, he has offered an explanation for manager Steve Clarke’s selection of a 28-man roster for the 2024 exhibition matches against Finland and Gibraltar.
For tomorrow’s friendly international matches against Faro on Monday, June 3, and Hampden, Glasgow on Friday, June 7, the players chosen by the national team management will be made available to the public.
The maximum number of players from each of the 24 participating nations who can travel to the championships in Germany was raised this month by UEFA’s organisers from 23 to 26, much like they did for Euro 2020.
However, in order to evaluate the health of players who have been sidelined by injury or haven’t played much in recent weeks, Clarke will initially choose 28 players. He can turn in his final roster for Euro 2024 until Friday, June 7, at 11 p.m.
It was thought that Everton defender Nathan Paterson, who had surgery last month, and Brentford full-back Hickey, who hasn’t played since October owing to a hamstring problem, would recover in time to play in the Group A matches against Germany, Switzerland, and Hungary. Carver, though, was adamant that the two would fall short.
He declared, “We are going to take it up to 28,” during a press appearance in Manchester to advertise Chase’s digital bank’s football teaching programmes.
“We have a lot of potential to take into account, therefore after careful evaluation, we believe it makes sense to bring in 28 players. The deadline for choosing the final squad is June 7.
The Herald: “We own all of the details regarding each player, including their current level of fitness and the amount of minutes they have played. I believe it is worthwhile for them to stay at the camp as a result.
“After that, we get daily access to them and the two games, naturally. so that we can thoroughly review them before Steve finally selects the 26
Carver expressed his disappointment that Hickey, Paterson, and Lewis Ferguson, the midfielder for Bologna, were not included in the Euro 2024 competition, but he was also optimistic about the three players’ chances of competing in big tournament finals again in the future.
“Let’s just touch on the three lads in particular, Fergie, Patto and Aaron, who have serious injuries and are out for a period of time,” he continued. “We knew they were going to be out and they have been excellent.”
They are a very young bunch of players, so they will have Europeans to attack in the future, but they have played a significant part, so I’m sorry they won’t be included.
As a result, we are unsure of what to do. That is not within our control. We have no control over the injuries they sustained at their clubs. However, we must maintain as much optimism as possible over our current situation and our strategy for defeating the Euros.
“It is no good thinking what could have been and what we could have had it is about what we’ve got and what we’re going to do.”
