Rangers are very close to a “six-figure” agreement for Jefte of Fluminense, although the move is contingent upon a work permit being approved this summer, as reported by Daily Record.
The Brazilian was on loan at APOEL this season; but, the Cyprian team delayed a move in January, according to the newspaper [22 May, back page & page 51]. Now, it appears the Gers will finally get their man.
Though the player requires a work visa first, it is believed that Jefte would take Borna Barisic’s place at left back. Borna Barisic is expected to finish his six-year tenure in Scotland as a transfer to Trabzonspor approaches.
In the summertime Ibrox reconstruction, Rangers will sign Jefte.
Before the 2024–2025 season, it appears as though Philippe Clement has finally settled on his preferred full-back, and Jefte appears to be focusing solely on a move to the Scottish Premiership.
It will come as a great relief to the club that the 20-year-old made it quite plain that Ibrox was his preferred destination, even if APOEL had the first chance to sign him on a permanent move.
Trabzonspor appears to be pursuing Barisic, who appears to be leaving this summer, while Ridvan Yilmaz’s future is quite uncertain following strong rumours in January that he would be joining Galatasaray.
Of course, Clement would need more than just Jefte if both of the existing left-backs were to depart. But the fact that the club started looking before the summer transfer season opened is encouraging.
Although Rangers’ season-long injury problems shouldn’t be a justification for losing the Scottish Premiership, squad depth will be crucial in the upcoming campaign.
The Ibrox supporters have good reason to be enthusiastic about the redevelopment under Clement’s leadership, especially with Jose Cordoba expected to join the Gers this summer.
