Brendan Rodgers has been advised that there is no better job available than Chelsea, as a possible Celtic exit has been mooted. Pat Nevin believes the Northern Irishman may face yet another difficult decision about his employment as Celtic manager if the Blues come calling after Mauricio Pochettino was fired this week. Rodgers was an outcast at Parkhead when he abruptly left for Leicester City in 2019, and his return to the club last summer was rocky at first before he was eventually welcomed back.
However, Nevin feels that the former Liverpool manager will have difficulty saying no to Chelsea if they make a move for his services because they remain one of Europe’s greatest clubs and would represent the “pinnacle” of Rodgers’ career if he accepted the position.
Brendan loves Celtic; they are his team, and he has had wonderful success there. He was not warmly welcomed back because when he left to join Leicester, people believed he had abandoned the team,” Nevin told Prime Slots.
So he has been reluctantly accepted back by a large group. I don’t think Brendan would walk away easy, even if an old Premier League club came knocking. “However, this is Chelsea, and there might not be a better job for him out there. In his perspective, there is probably no better employment out there for him. I would suppose that when he began his coaching career at Chelsea, he closed his eyes and visualized the future, and that reaching the top job at Stamford Bridge would be the pinnacle of his success.
I truly feel sad for Brendan, even though he will not receive much compassion, believe me, but that is a very difficult decision if it comes in. Turning down Premier League Chelsea to work with a fantastic bunch of young players.”
