Man City’s agreement with Vincent Kompany adds a twist to Pep Guardiola’s succession plan.

Pep Guardiola’s current Manchester City contract is about to expire next month, and based on his previous remarks, it appears he hasn’t made up his mind to extend. After winning the Premier League for the sixth time, Guardiola made the following statement: “I want to play next season, but in all honesty, I’m more likely to say goodbye than to stay for another seven years.” We discuss and decide what is best for everyone for the upcoming season. I’m worn out and fatigued right now, yet I’m content and okay.”

Although his remarks caused some misunderstanding, it is generally understood that Guardiola intends to honor the remaining year on his contract and may decide to extend it, but he will not be staying for an additional seven years. In addition to being at ease with the manager’s decision, City will have makeshift measures in place for Guardiola’s eventual departure.

Should Guardiola be tasked with selecting his successor, he might support a well-known individual. The sooner or later, he will return. Regarding former captain Vincent Kompany from the previous season, he stated, “His destiny to be manager of City is already written in the stars.” It is certain to occur. I’m not sure when, but it will occur.

Kompany took a step back from the remarks. “I think City should always have the best manager in the world, and that is not me,” he stated.

“I hope he continues for another ten years since they now have the best manager in the world. If not, they ought to have the world’s greatest manager following Pep. Since I am far lower on the list, I don’t even have a second of thinking when I am working on it. Speaking back when Burnley was still in the Championship, Kompany noted that the team had an amazing promotion in 2022–2023 but has struggled in the Premier League this season following a significant summer spending spree, dropping to 19th place early this month. However, with rumors circulating that Kompany has a “verbal agreement” in place to take over the vacant Bayern Munich position, he may soon receive a significant promotion. That would bea significant improvement and a big step forward for a manager with little experience. His argument for not being considered for any future City positions was that he lacked elite experience; but, if he performs well at the Allianz Arena, it may be the ideal opportunity for him to establish his credentials at the greatest level.

After a few years of managerial transition, Bayern would like to keep Kompany in Germany if he performs well enough to convince City officials, providing they agree with Guardiola’s evaluation of him. It might be his first and only position among Europe’s best if he performs poorly. Although Kompany’s rumored step-up might not fit with Guardiola’s plans, it would give the Blues clarity on whether Kompany would be a suitable future hire with a probable vacancy at City next summer.

Similar to Kompany, if De Zerbi accepts an elite position with high expectations this summer, he could establish himself as a potential successor to Guardiola. However, if he succeeds somewhere, would he leave in as little as a year? Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left Brighton and is linked to several openings across Europe, is another name associated with succeeding Guardiola. Guardiola called De Zerbi one of the most influential managers of the last decade.

Include Enzo Maresca, a former assistant who recently received a promotion from Leicester and is being linked to Chelsea. Guardiola will make his choice during the course of the upcoming season, and they will eventually need to choose which path to go in regards to a successor. If Kompany decides to join Bayern, his progress will be closely monitored, and not just because he is a legend at the Etihad.
