According to the most recent sources, Southampton has made an offer for a playmaker in Germany as they try to bolster their first-team roster this summer.
Though they will still need to exercise caution this summer, the Saints will have much more leeway in the transfer market following their victory over Leeds United in the play-off final last weekend. The game that caused so much controversy is estimated to be valued between £135 million and £265 million, indicating how important it is to the side that advances.
However, the South Coast club’s recruitment was somewhat lacklustre during their final Premier League season. Paul Onuachu, Duje Caleta-Car, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and other players were paid a lot of money to play at St. Mary’s Stadium, but they had little effect.
In addition, Southampton lost a lot of high earners when they were demoted from the Premier League and were left with a significant salary bill in the Championship. The team will need to hire more shrewdly this summer in order to prevent a recurrence of the 2022–2023 campaign.
Sport Witness has obtained a story from BILD in Germany stating that the Saints are trying to sign Leonardo Bittencourt, a key player for Werder Bremen. According to the newspaper, Southampton is trying to lure the German offensive midfielder away from the Weserstadion by making a “attractive offer.”
Bittencourt has spent five years at Werder Bremen, having continued to be a member of the team during its 2021 relegation. According to Transfermarkt, the player’s current market value is £2.1 million, and he is reportedly prepared for a new challenge.
For Southampton, this would be a somewhat odd signing. Because of his versatility, Bittencourt can play a number of positions, including number ten, on both wings, as a center-forward, and as a central midfielder. This makes him an ideal fit for Russell Martin’s system.
The German playmaker has little opportunity for improvement, though, since he is now just outside of 30. Furthermore, Southampton mainly signs younger players in the hopes of turning a profit later on. Perhaps the entrance of Bittencourt would indicate a shift in the recruitment team’s strategy.
