Maikel Kieftenbeld stands over Jack Grealish during one of his Second City derby outings for Birmingham City

Legendary Birmingham City player Mengel Kieftenbeld was taken aback when FC Emmen decided not to extend their contract to him.

Even though the all-action midfielder was a regular for Emmen in the Dutch second division previous season, he was released by the team. The captain of Emmen, Kieftenbeld, says he is “very surprised by the announcement” that he will be free to depart when his contract expires.

After leaving St Andrew’s in 2021, Kieftenbeld briefly played for Millwall before spending the remaining two seasons at Emmen. Injury marred his first season in Emmen, but he recovered to play well and gain popularity in the second half of the previous campaign. But at thirty-three, he’s currently on the lookout for his sixth club of his career.

Burke’s future is up for decision.

Oliver Burke, the Blues washout, will have his future determined in the coming days when Werder Bremen’s administration meets with the forward’s agents.

Werder Bremen had high hopes for Burke, but he struggled at Birmingham, only managing one goal and one assist in 21 Championship games. After New Year’s Day, he made one Championship start, a terrible performance against Rotherham that ended with him being hobbled by his own supporters at halftime.

According to the German daily BILD, Burke’s future is not with the team that placed ninth in the Bundesliga the previous year. In a BILD interview, Werder’s professional manager Clemens Fritz declared: “We haven’t spoken yet, but we will be in contact with his consulting agency this week and discuss the future.”

Castillo is moving once more.

After being released by Chelsea, former Blues loanee Juan Castillo spent a year away from sport before joining RKC Waalwijk. Castillo has committed to a two-year deal with RKC, who placed 15th in the previous Eredivisie.

The former Netherlands youth international played just a few minutes at St Andrew’s before moving to Charlton Athletic in January after spending the first half of the 2021–2022 season on loan at Blues. Castillo, 24, has not engaged in any competitive gaming since February 2022.

Yan Valery, another former Blues loanee, is set to play for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship seeking a second chance. After spending seven games on loan at Blues in 2021, the right-back was benched after Lee Bowyer was appointed.

In 2022, Valery relocated to France to play for Angers, and he was a key player in their return to Ligue 1 the previous season. However, Angers is eager to cash in on his one-year contract, and Wednesday is first in queue.

When Valery was a player at St. Mary’s, Wednesday’s manager Danny Rohl was a coach at Southampton, working under Ralph Hassenhuttl.Standard Liege and Montpellier are also interested in Valery, according to The Star, although Wednesday is the clear favourite.
