Coventry City fans are debating whether latest signing Jack Rudoni is the new Callum O’Hare. Here we get the expert view of Huddersfield Town writer Steve Chicken to see where their similarities lie
Coventry City supporters are divided on whether Jack Rudoni is a suitable substitute for Callum O’Hare.
Until the dynamic 23-year-old takes the pitch in preseason and we see where he is used, we won’t truly know until Mark Robins says, “yes,” which is highly improbable.
Naturally, comparing like-for-like would be unfair and would put undue pressure on the young player, who is the Sky Blues’ third summer acquisition of the transfer window thus far. He signed a four-year contract with a one-year option to stay in the club’s favour, and CoventryLive understands that the fee was “undisclosed.”

Advantages
He is first and foremost a really hard worker. He covers a great deal of ground, and I believe he was almost always at the top of Huddersfield’s running charts. Some of the figures he shared and the distance he travelled were extremely large. I heard a few players who were on par with (former star man) Lewis O’Brien, which is one of the best praises you can give a Huddersfield player in terms of work ethic.

Weaknesses and improvements
Having scored more than ten goals, he signed with Wimbledon. He played for a bad team that was demoted from League One his final season there, but those numbers are still really good—I believe he finished with 12 goals and 8 assists. However, Huddersfield was never able to truly finish him off. He was actually very annoying in that sense. Though his Wimbledon record indicates that he clearly possesses it someplace, it never materialised at Huddersfield. Although he possesses a good left foot, we never saw the finished product to the extent that, in my opinion, his Wimbledon statistics would have suggested.
His terrible leading is the only other issue.
He can play on the wings at times and possesses left foot. He was specifically selected by André Breitenreiter at number ten, but prior to Breitenreiter’s arrival, former Huddersfield managers had never actually used a ten. It seems to me that he played a more aggressive role there most of the time for Wimbledon, either wide or in a ten, and that’s where he scored goals for them.
But based on my observations of him at Huddersfield, I have always thought of him as an eight for the reasons I have mentioned: his work rate, his ability to carry the ball, and his tackling all make him an eight rather than a ten. However, I firmly believe that he is a ten if he can locate his shooting boots once more.
Is he the Carry O’Hare of today?
When you play as a ten, everything boils down to that final result. On that basis, you are evaluated. His demise isn’t really advantageous. He’s okay, but his passing won’t be able to split a defence five times in a game. He does, in my opinion, have a tendency to look for the shot and solid intuition about where to enter, so there’s that to grow on.
Additionally, he’s always in the ideal spot for a cut-back to come to him if they want him to take Callum O’Hare’s place. His finishing is the only thing that needs improvement. Many shots miss the mark, go against the post, and other such misses. It’s not like every time he attempted a throw-in, he was shanking it out. He was never far enough from the mark, even if he frequently came close.
Do you believe he will be able to play in Coventry’s style?
Yes, I have seen Coventry play a lot over the past few seasons and have always appreciated how disciplined and hardworking they are. I believe that Mark Robins and the supporters will appreciate his work ethic and willingness to perform the grunt work that many attacking players don’t always do. With athletes like that, it’s not always a given, but with Jack, it is. For an attacking midfielder, he has a very high tackle total per game, and I think he would fit in well in Coventry.

The fans seemed to like him a lot. Because he wears his hair differently on the field—bleached blonde or permed—and because youngsters like to cling onto things like that, he is especially well-liked by children.
Although his work dedication and work pace are highly praised, his occasional lack of finished product can be frustrating. However, Huddersfield made it quite apparent in their announcement that they would only release a player if they received the appropriate amount for them.
In summary:
According to Andy Turner, Jack and Callum exhibit a lot of the same traits, including an amazing work ethic, a readiness to cover and defend, the ability to move the ball upfield, and the ability to enter scoring opportunities in the last third of the game. Similar to O’Hare, he hasn’t always scored goals, but some managers have used him as a number ten, while others have used him as a number eight. In actuality, the Sky Blues have a talented player who is projected to improve and grow even more, making him a valuable addition to the team. This versatile guy is also a pretty good player.
