Sambi Lokonga, a midfielder for Luton, believed that the Town fans weren’t “deserving” of watching their team lose 5-1 to Brentford at home over the weekend.
After being forced to miss the previous nine games due to a hamstring injury, the on-loan Arsenal player made his return to the team at halftime during the 4-1 loss to Liverpool. Prior to kickoff, fans who had traveled to Kenilworth Road were ecstatic to hear that the talented Belgian international will be playing again. He was included with Gabe Osho and Teden Mengi.
It got off to a good start as well, with Lokonga returning to his deep-lying role and Ross Barkley looking to get on the ball and surge forward when the opportunities presented themselves. Following Yoanne Wissa’s incredible finish to give the Bees the lead, Tahith Chong had a terrific opportunity that he blasted over, and then Brentford added the vital second just before halftime.
The Gunner was unable to stop Town’s opponents from scoring two more goals after the break, and with 20 minutes remaining, he was substituted along with Chong. However, the visitors did score again, with Luke Berry earning the merest of victories in stoppage time. Lokonga later posted a message on Instagram that read, “Your support don’t deserve this kind of result.” We’re going to keep fighting until you get what you’re due!”
“I just want to touch on the fans as well, how we’re getting clapped off there I’ll never know to be honest,” captain Carlton Morris remarked, echoing his feelings. They have been fantastic for us the entire season, and that will be vital since we still have a great chance to win. We’re going to need them more than ever because I believe in myself and my teammates that we can win and score enough points to stay up in the upcoming games.
Edwards said he knew the game was over when he decided to replace the 24-year-old, who had made 15 appearances overall since joining from the Emirates back in August, even though Town had a reputation for being able to rally late in games this season. “Bringing Sambi off after 70 minutes, we’re thinking, right the game is done, let’s look after him,” Edwards continued.
It was challenging at the time because we had lost Burkey (Reece Burke) and were once again short on defenders. I truly thought we had enough attacking play in the first half to still pose a threat to them.
