Josh Allen, a pass-rusher for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pro Bowler, has changed his name. The former outstanding player for Abbeville High School declared on Tuesday that he would now go by Joshua Hines-Allen and wear Hines-Allen on his jersey. Hines-Allen remarked, “I am still that person, even though my last name has changed.” “And I’m going to play even better and keep playing like that.” Allen put the shift down to family.
Hines-Allen remarked, “I’ve always been a Hines, and legacy is forever.” As the youngest in a family full of athletes, I find that family holds special significance for me. Having seen all of my sisters’ sports and learned about my uncles’ college and NBA careers adds an extra layer of meaning to our relationship. It seemed virtually inevitable that I would walk in their shoes.
Two of his sisters played college basketball, and Myisha Hines-Allen is a player with the Washington Mystics in the Women’s National Basketball Association. The Golden State Warriors selected the uncle of the pass-rusher, Greg Hines, in the 1983 NBA Draft.
Joshua Hines-Allen remarked, “It’s going to be a surreal moment the first time I get my name announced.” “.. As a child, I remember my sisters running out of the tunnel as the lights go out and I hear “Hines-Allen.” I just thought it was the coolest thing that everyone was watching them. In Jacksonville, Hines-Allen intends to host a jersey exchange for supporters who possess his “Allen 41” jersey. Hines-Allen was an All-State wide receiver for Abbeville High School in 2013 before going on to become a two-time Pro Bowler and a unanimous selection as an All-American at Kentucky. Living with his aunt and uncle, he attended Abbeville for the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grades before finishing his senior year in his native New Jersey.
As the seventh pick overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, Allen was selected by Jacksonville. As a rookie, he was selected for the Pro Bowl after recording 10.5 sacks. Between his first year and his second Pro Bowl appearance in 2023, he played in three seasons and totaled 17 sacks. Hines-Allen set a team single-season record in 2023 by finishing tied for second in the NFL with 17.5 sacks. In addition, he finished the previous season with 66 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 33 quarterback hits, one interception, and two forced fumbles.
