George Byers, a midfielder, was one of six senior players revealed to be departing the club in last week’s retained list. The Star reported earlier this month that the recently demoted Millers were among several clubs interested in taking on Byers. Now that defender Reece James has also had his departure from S6 revealed, we can also disclose that Rotherham will attempt to convince James to join Steve Evans in his rebuilding of the team at the New York Stadium. The League One team, who intends to return immediately to the second division, has already been active throughout the transfer window as evidenced by the announcement of the noteworthy additions of Shaun McWilliams, Joe Rafferty, and Jonson Clarke-Harris.
They’ll face competition, with talks believed to be taking place this week. James, 30, is understood to be of interest to other clubs in League One and League Two as he was in January. A move to Rotherham would act a return to a club for which he made seven league appearances on loan during the 2014/15 season while a youngster with Manchester United. Steve Evans was manager at the time.
James, who was instrumental in their stunning League One promotion, will depart on Wednesday. In 45 games while wearing Owls colors, he recorded four assists. He only managed one goal for the team, their historic third coming off a dummy by Lee Gregory in the play-off semifinal victory over Peterborough United, known as the “Hillsborough Miracle.” Byers and James will both formally leave the Wednesday team at the conclusion of their contracts in one month. Juan Delgado, Ciaran Brennan, and Tyreek Bakinson are among the other players that have confirmed their departure and are currently looking for new teams. Gregory has officially switched to Mansfield Town.
