After joining Rotherham United, Shaun McWilliams thanked everyone at the club and thought back on his “crazy” Cobblers career.
Since McWilliams’ contract at Sixfields expired this summer, he decided to sign with the Millers, who finished last season in the Sky Bet Championship.
The decision ends McWilliams’ lengthy relationship with the Cobbers, as he attended the club’s Academy.
When he was seventeen years old, in an April 2017 1-1 draw at Rochdale, he made his Cobblers debut off the bench.
McWilliams made 187 starts, 42 substitute appearances, and seven goals during his time with his local team.
He believed the moment was ripe to start the next phase of his career, helping Rotherham win the Championship the first time around.
However, McWilliams will always remember his trip with Cobblers.
The 25-year-old remarked, “It’s been a crazy journey, so long but it’s gone so quick.”
It’s difficult to put into words, but when I initially arrived and immediately got to work, they warmed up to me and made everything on the pitch much simpler for me.
“All I can say is thank you.
“We’ve had ups and downs along the way, but the fans have been amazing—they’ve sang my name at every game.
“I can’t thank them enough and I’ll see them shortly.”
After speaking with Rotherham manager Steve Evans, McWilliams decided to leave the club and move to south Yorkshire despite the Cobblers offering him a new contract.
“There has been a rapid improvement,” McWilliams remarked.
“I played against the gaffer, Evans, a few times, so I clearly knew him previously, but we had a terrific conversation when we met in person last week.
“Over the weekend, things got out of hand quite rapidly, so I’m relieved that it’s over with now.
things’s good to finish things ahead of schedule because the season isn’t quite over yet.
“I’m excited to be here with the gaffer and the individuals that work behind the scenes.
“It was an obvious choice because the club speaks for itself, is a huge club, and would want to make things right immediately after what happened last year.
“The gaffer has expressed some interest in me over the last two years, and that immediately sold it to me when we first met. He talked about how he saw me as a player.
“I have spent ten years at Northampton, so it has been a lengthy tenure, and I have relished every moment of it.
“The gaffer (Jon Brady) at Northampton, who has a lot of faith in me, has a soft spot for me and is the source of this next chapter of my book.
“The gaffer here, I think I’m going to get that same relationship and as long as I can perform on the pitch, we can have a good future together.”
At Rotherham, McWilliams wants to get his career going and reach new heights.
He stated on the Millers website: “My goal has always been to play at the highest level, so coming here and getting promoted alongside you guys who want to get promoted right away is the next step for me.
“I want to be a part of that project because of its size and the club’s impressive stadium.
“It’s a challenge for me to put myself out there since your prime is usually between the ages of 25 and 29, and I’m just hitting that.
“It’s time to exhibit it; I know how I want to develop.
I think this will be a wise decision for me, and I’m excited about it.
“I’m thrilled that I can leave now and stop worrying about where I’m going to be.
“Having been at Northampton for 10 years, I’ve always had a home, and I’m looking forward to this being my next home.”
