Celtic Want Answers: Club Write to SFA Over Ibrox Flashpoint

The match took a dramatic turn when Rangers’ Fabio Silva was initially booked for diving after a challenge by Celtic’s Alistair Johnston. However, following VAR intervention, referee John Beaton checked the pitchside monitor and awarded a penalty instead. The essence of Celtic’s grievance is that they believe Beaton was handed inadequate footage during the VAR review. The club claims that the film failed to show the initial contact, in which Johnston touched the ball before Silva crashed with him. Celtic claims that the missing footage was critical and may have justified the referee’s original ruling.
Furthermore, Celtic is disputing the application of the rules in this case. According to IFAB criteria, a penalty may still be issued if a tackle that originally plays the ball is deemed negligent, reckless, or conducted with excessive force. Celtic feels that Johnston’s tackle did not match these standards, and so the decision to punish it was incorrect.
