Amidst a remarkable run, Sky’s Angel Reese wins WNBA Rookie of the Month.

The Chicago Sky’s 2024 season has gotten off to a shaky start. But on her professional debut, rookie forward Angel Reese has played brilliantly. Reese won her first WNBA Rookie of the Month award for June 2024, the league announced on Tuesday, despite fierce competition from Caitlin Clark.

Reese put up 14.5 points and grabbed 13.2 rebounds per game on average in June. Her 11 games throughout the month saw her grab double digits in rebounds, which is the second-most consecutive games with 10+ rebounds in history. According to the Sky, she is the only player in first place on the league leaderboards for rebounds per game (11.4). Furthermore, from June 4 to June 10, Reese recorded 10 consecutive double-doubles. She also broke Candace Parker’s record for the most straight double-doubles in a single season in the WNBA. It’s still Reese’s streak as of July 2.

June 1st, against the Indiana Fever, marked Reese’s first-ever career-high 13 rebounds to start the month. Then, on June 12 against the Connecticut Sun, she recorded her first-ever 20-point performance. In a June 20 victory over Dallas, she grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in addition to scoring 16 points. On June 23, she defeated Indiana with a career-high 25 points and 16 rebounds. Reese also becomes just the third rookie in history to average at least 13.0 points and 11.0 rebounds, behind Yolanda Griffith (1999) and Tina Charles (2010). She becomes the second player in franchise history to win Rookie of the Month for the Sky, and the first since Elena Delle Donne (four times in 2013).

In June, a few formidable rivals pushed Angel Reese to new heights. Her ascent continues since the Sky have more difficult games scheduled for July. Resee can still win another Rookie of the Month award and potentially the WNBA Rookie of the Year title in the fall if she keeps up her performance.
