Analyst offers surprising Trevor Lawrence prediction

Some argue that by offering quarterback Trevor Lawrence a lucrative agreement, the Jacksonville Jaguars overpaid for him. But next season, one analyst thinks he’ll show that he was well worth the money. Along with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Lawrence is now the highest-paid athlete in the NFL after agreeing to a five-year, $275 million contract. Given that Jacksonville missed the playoffs and he appeared to deteriorate last season, the trade was rather unexpected. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has ranked Lawrence 62nd out of 100 players. He ranked No. 23 in 2023. But Prisco is adamant that the former Pro Bowler will make a comeback in 2024.

Lawrence struggled with calf, ankle, and knee problems last season, which may have had an impact on his performance. Reporters were recently informed by the 24-year-old passer that he wasn’t feeling “100 percent” until March. If he stays healthy, oddsmakers think Lawrence will be mentioned among the MVP candidates. FanDuel had him at +2500 to win the award as of Tuesday, along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets, Matthew Stafford of Los Angeles, and Tua Tagovailoa of Miami.

The first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence, has yet to demonstrate his superiority. The former Pro Bowler has completed 63.8 percent of his throws for 58 touchdowns, 39 interceptions, and a below-average passer rating of 85 in three seasons. Although he has a strong resume, it doesn’t prove he deserves to be among the league’s highest paid players.

There are still questions about Lawrence, and he will need to perform well this coming season to allay his doubters and demonstrate that he deserves his new contract. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud won 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and led Houston to the playoffs. FanDuel gives him the third-best MVP odds (+1000).
