In order to compete with Jacob Mendy for the left-back position at Wrexham this summer, Phil Parkinson ought to set his sights on an EFL star. Plans are now being made by Wrexham to reinforce several areas of their squad this summer.

The Reds’ primary priority is to sign released Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, but given the current dearth of options, they also need to reinforce at left defender. James McClean and Jacob Mendy are the only choices available to Phil Parkinson in that position; however, McClean is more suited as a central midfielder, therefore left-back options are limited. Despite an injury that ended the season, Mendy had a successful season in League Two, making 31 games and contributing two goals and five assists.

The 27-year-old’s ability is questioned by others, who believe he isn’t skilled enough to play in League One. For this reason, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds need to focus on one EFL star. Will Ferry, a free agent from Cheltenham, ought to be the goal for Wrexham. The Gazette claims that Blackpool, Wrexham’s third-tier opponents, are pursuing a deal for Will Ferry, the left-back for Cheltenham Town. The 23-year-old’s contract with the team expires this summer, and multiple EFL teams are reportedly pursuing him; however, it is unclear if Wrexham is one of them.

But as the Reds are searching for a new left-back during the transfer window, signing Ferry for free would be an inexpensive way to push Mendy. Two years ago, Cheltenham signed the young player to a long-term contract from Southampton, and in 82 games, he has scored two goals and provided eight assists. He participated in all but three League One games for the Robins last season, and EFL writer Gabriel Sutton called him “excellent.” Indeed, Mendy would have fierce competition on the left flank from the Bury-born wing-back.

How Will Ferry compares to Jacob Mendy

This summer, Wrexham is trying to replace Mendy, and Ferry might be the player Parkinson has been waiting for. However, there hasn’t been any real interest in any player other from Wigan’s Tom Pearce. According to Sofascore, here is how the two players compare in a number of categories from the previous season.

In addition to making more interceptions and tackles per game, he is recovering more passes. That might be explained by the Cheltenham star playing more defense for a team that was demoted, but he was also playing in a lower team and a division above Mendy and excelling. Taking everything into account, Wrexham would be far worse off trying to sign Ferry on a free transfer so that he can compete or even start for the Reds on a regular basis.
