Kevin Nagle, the owner of Huddersfield Town, claims that the team’s fifth-place finish in League One is “not good enough” as they attempt to return to the Championship.
With 22 points from their first 13 games of the season, the Terriers are currently in a play-off spot.
Town had a strong start to their League One campaign after being relegated the previous season, winning four of their first five games. However, they then dropped to 15th place in the standings after losing four straight games. But in recent weeks, the Terriers have improved their play to put themselves back in the running for promotion.
Although they are happy with the improvement in outcomes, Nagle is keen to maintain their high standards as they strive to meet their goal this term.
“I feel good,” the Terriers’ owner said on BBC Radio Leeds prior to Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Exeter City. The team is, in my opinion, performing far better now than they were, say, three weeks ago or even a month ago. The guys are really positive, I believe, and I believe we’re back on course.
“I’ll tell you what I want to see: don’t move the ball back until we have to, stay on the front feet, and move the ball upfield.
However, they are improving. Although the season is still early, I believe our coach has done a great job of transitioning from speculating about the starting lineup to now having a really positive feeling—unless there are injuries, of course. We’ve made progress, in my opinion, in attacking more and moving the ball forward on the front foot throughout that [period].
“No, not good enough,” said Nagle in response to a question about whether fifth position was sufficient at this point in the campaign. “I think everybody in the entire organisation knows that.” We will either have to fight for it or advance to the next level. That implies that we must either be in the playoffs or finish first or second.
The beauty, in my opinion, is that Michael Duff is aware of what is happening. He understood when we recruited him that we wanted to return to the Championship League and that we needed to leave League One, so we’ve truly put together a team [to do that]. We believe we have the appropriate players, who were chosen after consulting with all parties. We still have that January window to look forward to, even if it’s only one or two short.
“I believe that reaching the Championship League is our main objective at the moment. Beyond that, things may appear quite different, yet there are certain players who could compete in the Championship. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the team.
With Saturday’s victory over Exeter City, Town’s League One winning streak now stands at four games; the Terriers have won three and drawn one of those games.
Nagle is eager for Town to continue and improve on their current performance, hoping that his team’s losing trend is now over.
“I’m not really considering [not getting] promoted at the moment. “You start acting negatively if you think negatively,” he stated. We are currently considering resuming our winning streak. We’ve discussed going on a ten-game streak since we haven’t lost in, I believe, four games.
“I believe the quality of the guys on the pitch will carry them through, so let’s cross our fingers for a little bit of luck.”
