Barnsley, Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United’s rivals appoint Chelsea coach as new boss

Mark Robinson has been named head coach of Barnsley, Huddersfield Town, and Burton Albion, the League One rivals of Rotherham United.

With a change in ownership since the end of the 2023–2024 season, a new era is being ushered in at the Pirelli Stadium. After leading Barnsley for a while, former coach Martin Paterson is moving on to new pastures, thus there has also been movement in the dugout.

Robinson, who most recently served as the Chelsea Development Squad’s head coach, has taken his place. The 57-year-old has overseen AFC Wimbledon in the past, so she also has senior management expertise.

“I’m incredibly proud to have been given this opportunity at Burton Albion,” Robinson declared following his appointment as Burton’s manager. The new owners’ announcement of their goals and plans for the future, together with my meeting with Ben Robinson, really got me enthused about what we may do together here.

The owners have made their expectations quite clear: we want to create a squad that has a strong fan base, and playing style will play a big part in that. I want to build a squad that is exciting to watch, competitive, and full of energy—a team that the community and supporters can truly get behind and be proud to represent.

“As a coach over the past 20 years, I have dedicated myself to helping young players develop, and we aim to combine the team’s success with that effort. The owners and I share the same opinion that, while keeping winning football games as our top priority, this strategy will be essential to the club’s long-term prosperity.

“I’m excited to get started right away and get to know everyone in the Burton community, the fans, and the football team.”

Robinson, who is well-known for nurturing young talent, managed AFC Wimbledon’s youth program as they advanced through the divisions. He developed players like Lewis Hall and Omari Hutchinson at Chelsea.
