Marcel Oakley and Scott Hogan were among 14 players to depart St Andrew’s this summer following the expiration of their contracts with Birmingham City. While Hogan was a key figure in the senior squad, Oakley was a product of the club’s academy.
Veteran striker Hogan has dropped down two divisions to join MK Dons in League Two. The Dons, who recently appointed Scott Lindsey as their new manager, have brought in Hogan to bolster their promotion campaign.
Discussing his transfer, Hogan shared: “It’s really exciting to be part of something. I’ve been out of contract, so it’s been a tough time, and it had to be a project that genuinely excited me to play football! What Scott Lindsey and Liam Sweeting told me about the owners and their ambitions makes this a fantastic place to be and a great project to join.”
Hogan originally signed for Birmingham from arch-rivals Aston Villa in September 2020 for an undisclosed fee, following a £12 million move to Villa. During his time at Birmingham, he netted 36 goals in 158 appearances.
As for Oakley, he has joined Solihull Moors in the National League on a short-term deal, pending league and FA approval. The 21-year-old could make his debut against Oldham Athletic today (October 5). Oakley made eight first-team appearances, debuting as an 18-year-old in a Carabao Cup tie against Colchester United, where he scored the match-winning goal. His final appearance for the club came as a substitute in a 3-1 loss to Sunderland in November 2023. He was included in the squad for a match against Leeds United on New Year’s Day, but it was his last involvement with the first team. He also had loan spells with Arbroath and Queen’s Park in Scotland.
