MARK Beesley accepted Warrington Town’s 3-1 opening-day defeat to King’s Lynn Town without complaints and is now focused on addressing the issues that led to the loss. The Yellows’ second season in National League North began poorly, with their only goal from Matty McDonald arriving after they were already 3-0 down.
Gold Omatoyo scored twice for King’s Lynn, and Tom Hughes added another, ensuring the hosts had a strong start. While Beesley noted some positives for his team, he admitted they were second-best on the day.
“We continued to fight until the end and managed to get a goal back. We might have pulled another one back to make it 3-2, but King’s Lynn were the better team. They deserved the win,” he said.
Beesley also noted that although Warrington started well and had a chance to go 1-0 up, which might have changed the game’s dynamic, they missed opportunities and needed to be more effective with the chances they created.
He had no issues with the final result, acknowledging that King’s Lynn were superior and will likely be among the top teams this season.
Omatoyo’s ninth-minute header from a corner gave King’s Lynn an early lead against the run of play. Despite a superb penalty save from goalkeeper Dan Atherton to keep Warrington in the game at halftime, Hughes and Omatoyo’s second goal pushed the match further away. McDonald’s late goal ensured Warrington wasn’t shut out entirely.
Beesley did express frustration with the awarding of Omatoyo’s first goal, feeling Atherton was fouled during the corner. “We discussed the importance of set pieces before the game, and I think Dan was fouled – it’s usually a foul. He made a great save from a penalty, but we struggled in the second half,” he said.
He emphasized that the young players need to adjust to the realities of competitive football, acknowledging the need for constant focus and improvement. Despite the defeat, Beesley sees positives and stresses that the season is still young with 45 more games to play.
