‘Best version of myself’ – Exclusive: QPR, West Brom target opens up on flying form as deal winds down

Josh Murphy, an Oxford United winger and suspected QPR, West Brom, and Hull City target, has credited manager Des Buckingham for his recent outstanding play.

Murphy, an Oxford United player, had previously drawn attention while playing for Cardiff City in the Premier League and Norwich City in the second division. But up until lately, the 29-year-old had having trouble establishing himself at Oxford United.

The London-born winger struggled to get playing time under Liam Manning, but Des Buckingham has started him on a regular basis, and he has been playing well since rejoining the team in February.

Amidst links with West Brom, QPR, and Hull City, Murphy’s comeback with six goals and three assists in 14 games has been crucial in propelling the U’s back into the play-off race.

Murphy has now talked about his recent improvements in form. Speaking exclusively to Sky Bet on behalf of The72, the Oxford United player emphasized the contribution Buckingham has made to his impressive performances in addition to his own ongoing hard work.

“I owe my current form shift to hard work on my part and the manager’s belief in me, which enabled me to go out and be the greatest version of myself.

It has gone hand in hand, and I’m glad I can contribute to the team on the field and score the goals and assists that are turning out to be crucial at the conclusion of the season.

Getting back into it

Murphy may not have had the easiest seasons recently, but under Buckingham, he has returned to his dangerous best. Hopefully, he stays put wherever he is for the upcoming season.

Oxford United is currently slightly outside the top six, although they can yet make the playoffs. One point separates them from Barnsley in fifth position and sixth-place Lincoln City, and Blackpool is still in the running.

Murphy’s performance against Exeter City will be crucial to his chances of making the playoffs.

But at the end of the campaign, a choice will have to be made about his future. Murphy’s contract expires this summer, and given how interested QPR, West Brom, and Hull City are, it’s possible that he may have other alternatives after his outstanding 2024.
