Blackburn Rovers man makes top flight switch

Blackburn Rovers Man Makes Top Flight Switch - The Real EFL

The Lancashire Telegraph has reported that Blackburn Rovers has lost academy product Luca Dahl Tomasson to Feyenoord, a top-tier Dutch team.

Supporters may recognise the name Luca as the son of Jon Dahl Tomasson, the manager of the Swedish national team currently holding the position at Rovers.

Luca, a 16-year-old attacking midfielder, has spent multiple seasons in the Rovers academy. He leaves Ewood Park for the prestigious surroundings of De Kuip, a pitch where its occupants, known as De Club aan de Maas, finished second in the Eredivisie last season, though, before any idea of a full pro agreement could be ignited.

The young player is reportedly going to be a member of Erik van der Ven’s Under-17 team for the Dutch club next season.

“Feyenoord is a unique club for me in numerous aspects,” he stated on the Feyenoord website.”I used to go to De Kuip on a daily basis as a little lad to see my father play matches.

It’s even more meaningful to me because I can now walk in his footsteps. I’m eager to demonstrate my skills and play in the Feyenoord shirt myself.

Dahl Tomasson was a member of Excelsior Rotterdam’s youth setup before joining Blackburn, the same club where his father began his managerial career.

In 112 appearances for Denmark, Jon Dahl Tomasson netted 52 goals, including victories (3-2) and 4-1 against England in 2003 and 2005. In addition to playing for Newcastle, he scored goals for Milan, Heerenveen, and Stuttgart in 2003, helping them win both the Champions League and Serie A.

There were many problems throughout his tenure as Blackburn’s manager. Although he led the team to seventh place in the Championship and almost missed the play-offs in 2022–2023 by one point, the previous season was a complete disaster. Rovers struggled with relegation until February 2024, when they ultimately fired the head coach and hired John Eustace in his place.

Not that his stock was badly damaged; after all, he had twice won the Allsvenskan while at Malmo, and after Sweden failed to qualify for Euro 2024, they quickly hired him as their coach.

Under his father, Luca was able to succeed at Excelsior and Blackburn. Since he won’t be able to follow him to Sweden, it would be wise to choose a former team. All jokes aside, younger players may find the Eredivisie to be slightly more challenging than the Championship due to its more technical style.

Dahl Tomasson Junior is not anticipated to play for Feyenoord this season, but it is more likely that he will break through there than in the Championship, a division that is very competitive and has many clubs with a lot to lose.

But this will be one that got away for Rovers if he ends up like his father.
