Danny Rohl will benefit greatly from Sheffield Wednesday’s star Bambo Diaby’s expected return for this weekend’s pivotal Championship matchup with West Brom.
Sheffield Wednesday delighted following massive victory
The Owls traveled to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon for a crucial matchup at the bottom of the standings, which was one of their most significant games of the season.
Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over their rivals made for an unforgettable day at work. They took the lead thanks to a spectacular long-range lobbed goal from Josh Windass. Although Blackburn managed to pull one back before halftime, Marvin Johnson gave Rohl’s team the lead in the second half, and the three points were sealed by goalkeeper Aynsley Pears’ disastrous own goal.
With just two games left, the Owls are no longer in danger of relegating from the Championship. Their next game is a Saturday afternoon home meeting against West Brom. In a game that is vital to both teams as the Baggies attempt to make the playoffs this year, it is yet another historic event at Hillsborough.
Wednesday will need as many of their key players to be ready as possible in order to secure another big win, and one of them has provided an important update over his fitness.
Sheffield Wednesday receives a major injury boost from Diaby.
Center back Babo Diaby, who suffered an injury against Blackburn that raised questions about whether he would play vs West Brom, reassured fans on X on Monday that he is fine:”We won a big game, so the day went well, and I’m fine. I appreciate the messages.
This is fantastic news for Wednesday because the 26-year-old is a key member of the defense, averaging three clearances per game and making 26 starts in the Championship this season. During his brief 41-minute appearance on Sunday, the Spaniard won four of five aerial duels, three of the ground duels, and an 83% pass completion percentage.
Throughout his tenure in England, Diaby has received a great deal of appreciation. In 2022, Preston manager Ryan Lowe praised Diaby, saying, “He has been an unbelievable character around the place.” He has been a breath of new air, but he still has a lot to learn and must put in a lot of effort into what we are attempting to do. I felt he was cool and collected today; the other day, he asked me what I meant by coolness.”
While Michael Ihiekwe is a possible worry after leaving the pitch with a leg injury of his own over the weekend, Diaby should be in contention to start at home against West Brom. Admittedly, Diaby is not always a sure starter with excellent options at the back for Rohl.
