A major advantage for Sunderland in their pursuit of Chris Willock is that the Championship winger will be freed from his Queens Park Rangers contract.
The Stadium of Light will require extensive renovations if the Black Cats hope to contend for promotion the following year. After finishing in sixth place in the 2022–2023 season, the team finished in 16th place this year, 17 points outside of the playoffs and just six above the relegation zone.
After three different head coaches in the last ten months, the board will need to select the ideal manager to lead them across the finish line next year. However, if Sunderland hopes to contend for promotion in the 2024–2025 campaign, then quality additions to the first team roster are also crucial.
Willock is one name that has been connected to a transfer to the Wearside outfit. Two weeks ago, the Roker Report disclosed that Sunderland is in negotiations with the 26-year-old in an attempt to bolster their attacking lineup.
The Black Cats now have even more hope of signing the former Huddersfield Town loanee, as Willock’s contract is about to expire and QPR is anticipated to make an announcement about his departure shortly.
Journalist Alan Nixon claims that Norwich City is also vying for his signing. The Canaries want to sign the Arsenal youth product even if they don’t get promoted back to the Premier League.
Willock has had a fantastic season with QPR. On Saturday, he made his 100th start for the team and Marti Cifuentes’ team won 2-1 away at Coventry City to cap off the season in style. It appeared to be his final outing for the London outfit, marking his 39th appearance in all competitions.
