Bournemouth appoint former Roma executive Tiago Pinto as first president of football operations

Following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in February, a former Benfica executive departed Stadio Olimpico.

Tiago Pinto has been named as Bournemouth’s first-ever president of football operations.

The 39-year-old Portuguese, who just resigned from his position as general manager of AS Roma, is said to have struck a three-year contract after he was granted a work permit on Thursday.

Pinto led Roma to both a Europa Conference League championship and a trip to the Europa League final. Prior to Tim Steidten’s hiring as technical director at West Ham United last year, he was previously connected to the position.

Pinto collaborated extensively with Jose Mourinho at Roma until his dismissal in January following a challenging season. With his contract set to end in June, he departed on his own volition the following month and revealed in an interview how difficult it was to fire Mourinho. He had to deal with a difficult financial scenario at Roma while Mourinho was at odds with the management. Pinto has previously worked with sporting director Rui Costa at Benfica. “Tiago is a world-class talent,” Roma chairman Dan Friedkin remarked when he hired him.

He managed Roma’s transfer negotiations with Bournemouth, where Justin Kluivert and Matias Vina were signed.

Richard Hughes, who departed Bournemouth in March to take up the position of sporting director at Liverpool, is not being replaced by Pinto. Simon Francis has already volunteered to take over as technical director of the first team. Pinto will collaborate closely with Francis and approach the football side of the company from a broader perspective.

With his background, Pinto’s appointment will be seen as something of a coup for Bournemouth and demonstrates the Premier League’s purchasing power once more. We should hear from them soon with an announcement.

Jim Frevola was appointed president of business operations at the Premier League team, and Pinto’s appointment is a part of their ongoing restructuring. The club’s first season went well, with head coach Andoni Iraola being rewarded with a new contract that runs until June 2026. The team finished in 12th place with its highest-ever point total.
