Following the heavy 6-0 loss to Chelsea on Monday, there’s growing worry that Everton might find themselves in a tense finish to the season.

The upcoming matches against Forest and Luton Town are crucial to avoid losing. As they prepare to face Nuno Espirito Santo’s team, Dyche faces numerous selection challenges to address.

Michael Keane could make first Everton start of 2024

£30 million acquisition Michael Keane has largely remained on the fringes of the team since the start of the year. The 31-year-old hasn’t started a match since facing Wolverhampton Wanderers towards the end of 2023.

However, Keane might now have the opportunity to start due to an injury suffered by one of Everton’s key players.

Jarrad Branthwaite was forced to leave the field during the match at Stamford Bridge. Following the game, manager Dyche provided an update on Branthwaite’s condition. Speaking immediately after the match, the 52-year-old remarked, “We hope Jarrad’s injury is minor, but we need to wait for further assessment. Shay Coleman has a groin issue, the severity of which is uncertain, and Patto’s injury appears more serious. He has a hamstring problem, and we’ll need to assess it as it settles tomorrow.”

Given Branthwaite’s importance to Everton this season, it’s imperative not to risk him if he’s not fully fit. Consequently, Keane could be poised for a return to the starting lineup.

Keane is likely to be Dyche’s choice to replace Branthwaite. The former Burnley defender stepped in for Branthwaite in the match in West London and may be needed to reestablish his partnership with James Tarkowski.

Certainly, Branthwaite’s potential absence will affect Everton’s prospects. However, it underscores the need for the rest of Dyche’s squad to elevate their performance.

In midfield, Amadou Onana and James Garner were disappointing on Monday evening. The same can be said for Beto upfront, who once again squandered some clear-cut chances.

These struggles occurred against a Chelsea side that has been underwhelming this season. It’s imperative for this group of players to engage in self-reflection and step up their game.
