Fletcher Toll has signed a contract with Northern Premier League Midlands Division side Corby Town. The former Heacham and Downham Town striker has adapted well to the step up to Step 4, scoring nine goals in the Steelmen’s first 12 games of the season.
Toll’s impressive goal-scoring form for the league leaders has drawn the interest of several clubs higher up the football pyramid, including Kettering Town, Corby’s Northamptonshire rivals, who play in the Southern League Central Premier Division.
Corby Town manager Gary Setchell has acknowledged the interest in Fletcher Toll from other clubs but believes staying at Corby is the best option for the 20-year-old striker right now. Setchell explained that after meeting with Toll and his family, they agreed that remaining with Corby, where he’s thriving, enjoying his football, and building a strong reputation, is the right move at this stage in his career.
Toll, who scored 40 goals in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division last season, has now netted 81 times since stepping into senior football at 18. His rapid progress has pleasantly surprised Setchell, who admits he knew Toll would score at this level but didn’t expect such a prolific start.
“Fletcher has settled in unbelievably well and has hit the ground running,” Setchell said. “I always thought he might hit his stride after two or three months, but if he continues this way, he could put up some big numbers.”
Setchell also praised Toll’s all-around game, noting that while there are areas for improvement, the young striker has already shown progress. Toll’s goalscoring ability is described as natural, with him scoring in various ways, including headers, penalties, and chips. Setchell acknowledged that Corby is unlikely to be Toll’s final destination but hopes to achieve success together over the next 18 to 20 months before Toll takes the next step in his career.
