According to The Sun, Rooney is at the centre of a “tug of war” between TNT and Sky Sports. Both broadcasters are vying for his services as a “top pundit” for the 2024–2025 season after paying £6.7 billion to stream games from 2025 to 2029.

The likes of Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher, Paul Merson, and Roy Keane are featured on Sky Sports’ coverage. Rio Ferdinand, Peter Crouch, and Joe Cole are on TNT in the interim. There is positive response from fans, and Rooney is’very highly respected’ among the TV producers.

Rooney is reportedly undecided about spending a season as a commentator, though. Notwithstanding his unfortunate tenure with the Blues, he is rumoured to have aspirations of going back to the dugout.

Following the dismissal of John Eustace, who had the team in the play-offs, Rooney led the squad for fifteen games. They fell to 20th place and were six points above the relegation zone after Rooney was fired. During his tenure in the dugout, he managed just two victories and collected 10 of a possible 45 points.

After leaving St Andrew’s, he has made appearances on Gary Neville’s podcast, the Overlap, and has contributed to the BBC’s FA Cup coverage as a pundit. In March, Rooney made an additional appearance on TNT Sport, lending his knowledge regarding the match between Manchester United and Everton, two of his previous teams. If he is unable to secure employment in football management, he will probably work for the BBC for their coverage of the 2024 European Championship.
