Brentford have suffered a major setback with forward Yoane Wissa expected to be out for around two months after picking up an injury during their 2-1 loss to Manchester City. The 28-year-old, who scored in the opening minute at the Etihad, was forced off just before halftime.
Wissa has been in excellent form this season, with three goals and one assist in four Premier League games. In his last nine league matches, he’s contributed to 10 goals, scoring seven and assisting three. Nottingham Forest made a £25 million bid for the DR Congo international last month, but Brentford rejected the offer.
Now sidelined until at least November, Brentford manager Thomas Frank described the news as “frustrating” and noted that it leaves a gap in the squad. However, Frank remains confident that other players will step up. Wissa’s injury came after a tackle from Mateo Kovacic just before halftime, for which the City midfielder received a yellow card. Frank called the challenge “reckless” but accepted that it wasn’t a red card offense.
This injury is a huge blow for Brentford, who are already missing striker Igor Thiago due to a serious knee injury that will keep him out until late 2024. The club signed Thiago for £30 million as a replacement for Ivan Toney, who joined Al-Ahli.
Brentford face Tottenham in their next Premier League match, aiming to bounce back. Despite tough fixtures against Liverpool and City, they have earned six points from their opening four games, with wins against Crystal Palace and Southampton.
