Cardiff City have secured the signing of centre-back Jesper Daland on a four-year contract.
WalesOnline initially reported Cardiff’s interest in Daland from Cercle Brugge last week. Following successful negotiations over the weekend and the impending departure of Mark McGuinness to Luton Town, Cardiff and the Belgian club agreed on a fee potentially reaching around £3 million for the defender.
After becoming Cardiff’s sixth summer signing, the 24-year-old former Norway youth international Daland stated, “I’m ready to get started. I’ve already played a few games this season and am very excited about what’s ahead. I’ve heard a lot about my first game being a derby—it’s a great way to start. I’m looking forward to the atmosphere, and I know how special this game is for the fans and everyone involved.”
Cardiff manager Erol Bulut revealed that this was not the first attempt to sign Daland, saying, “We’re thrilled to have Jesper with us. We tried to sign him in January but couldn’t because his previous club wouldn’t let him go. He’s an excellent defender and will contribute significantly to our build-up play. His versatility and ability to use both feet will be very valuable. The fans will enjoy watching him.”
As McGuinness’s exit approaches, Cardiff is expected to make a substantial profit from the deal, potentially reaching eight figures with add-ons. Daland, who joined Brugge from Norway in 2021 for about £1 million, has been a key player for the Belgian side, making 118 appearances.
Cardiff’s defense has conceded seven goals in their first two Championship games and has struggled recently against their South Wales rivals. Daland is hoped to make an immediate impact this season. The club also hopes to use the profits from sales this summer to fund the acquisition of a new striker before the transfer window closes.
