Breaking News: Charlton Athletic must sort Coventry City agreement for Nathan Jones promotion push

The forward clearly has a dangerous eye for goal

Following the Addicks’ dismal results under former manager Michael Appleton, Charlton Athletic hired former Luton Town manager Nathan Jones in February, demonstrating their aspirations.

Jones is still deservedly well recognised by Football League analysts despite a terrible stint in the Premier League with Southampton in 2022–2023, thanks to his outstanding performances with the Hatters.

The Welshman was promoted from League Two to League One at Kenilworth Road in 2018, but he left the Bedfordshire team in January 2019 to join Stoke City.

Nevertheless, the Hatters managed to secure their second-tier standing after winning the 2019 League One title, concluding the 2019–20 campaign in 19th place.

Prior to the 2020–21 season, Jones would return to Luton and lead the Hatters to a top–half Championship finish. In 2022, he would lead them to the playoffs.

Such accomplishments on Jones’ resume would surely have impressed the Addicks, and Valley supporters will be hoping that their team can launch a promotion push of their own in 2024–2025.

After losing his first game in the Addicks’ dugout against Reading on February 10, the former Hatters manager went on a promising run of 14 games without a loss while managing the London team.

The Valley’s spirits were probably not too low after losing to Wycombe Wanderers on the last day of play, but a promotion challenge might depend on how well the forthcoming summer transfer window goes.

The Addicks have been linked with Coventry City star Matty Godden

The Addicks are considering a move for Sky Blues forward Matty Godden, who has served his club admirably over the years, according to the South London Press & Mercury.

Godden scored 14 goals in just 26 appearances in the third tier when Mark Robins’ team was promoted from League One to the Championship after the 2019–20 season was shortened. He then assisted the Sky Blues in securing their Championship position by scoring six goals in the 2020–21 campaign.

Appearances 30
Starts 22
Goals 8
Assists 4
Expected goals (xG) 8.92
Expected assists (xA) 3.00

With 12 goals in 24 outings, the 32-year-old scored his greatest second-tier goal total ever in the 2021/22 season as Robins and company finished in the top half.

The Sky Blues advanced to the 2023 Championship play-off final, but they were defeated by Luton in a penalty shootout. Despite this setback, Godden’s eight goals and four assists during the regular season were a major contribution.

Godden could be a strong signing for the Addicks

The forward obviously has a dangerous eye for goal, but maybe he performs best when he can provide support for someone who is even more of a clinical goal scorer.

Godden was the ideal foil for Viktor Gyokeres for two and a half seasons. Gyokeres scored 21 goals in the 2022–23 Championship campaign, including goals in the regular season and playoffs.

In spite of the Addicks’ bottom-half finish, he might play a similar position at the Valley alongside Alfie May, who is undoubtedly the finest striker in League One. May won the 2023–24 Golden Boot with 23 goals.

May also has a lethal eye for goal at his old team, Cheltenham Town, where he scored 23 goals in the previous season before adding 20 goals in the third tier in 2022–2023.

Godden and May might be a potent offensive combination under Jones’ direction, and they could offer the Addicks real chances to advance, so the team needs to move quickly to sign the Sky Blues player.
