Chesterfield twice came from behind to secure a point against Walsall, who moved to the top of League Two after the draw at the SMH Group Stadium.
Nathan Lowe capitalized on a defensive mistake to give Walsall an early lead, but Darren Oldaker leveled for the Spireites with a free-kick just before halftime. Lowe struck again moments into the second half, but Dilan Markanday’s goal midway through the period ensured Chesterfield earned a well-deserved point.
Assistant manager Danny Webb expressed satisfaction with the result, saying, “We’re pleased with the outcome, we respect the point, respect the opponent, and it’s another unbeaten game.”
Webb was particularly pleased with Oldaker’s timely goal, which boosted team morale going into the break: “We were buzzing because we didn’t see it coming. We were so nervy in the first half, and it wasn’t like us.” He admitted that the team didn’t shift into higher gear as expected but praised the side for fighting hard: “We battled, and if you don’t play well and get a point, that’s a positive.”
Chesterfield’s manager, Paul Cook, made an immediate quadruple substitution, which helped turn the tide in the second half. Webb highlighted the impact of these changes, saying, “The gaffer is not afraid to make bold decisions, and it certainly helped us get the point.”
Chesterfield’s strong home form continued, with the team remaining unbeaten in five home games this season. Despite four of those being draws, Webb was quick to emphasize the club’s impressive overall home record, having lost only once in 37 games across all competitions.
“That was the best team we’ve played this season, and the biggest positive is that we didn’t leave empty-handed,” Webb concluded.
