BREAKING NEWS: Dundee v Rangers facing fresh pitch postponement: here’s the latest on Dens Park pitch fiasco

Rangers fans are still waiting to find out whether their Scottish Premiership match against Dundee will take place.

The Gers supporters come from far and wide, and you can be sure that some Goliath journeys to Dens Park are already underway ahead of the scheduled 8pm kickoff.

What is the latest on Dundee’s surface and when can Rangers fans expect confirmation?

Here’s what we know about Dundee’s terrible Dens Park surface and whether Rangers will play their Scottish Premiership game in hand.

Dundee v Rangers faces a new pitch postponement.

So let’s start from the beginning.

Rangers’ pre-international break visit to Dundee was postponed earlier in March, causing havoc with broadcasters and leading up to Sunday’s Old Firm match.

Rangers had a two-point lead in the Scottish Premiership, but the Dundee game was postponed for the fourth time this season, giving Celtic a lead to defend at Ibrox.

Rangers definitely want to reclaim their position after a 3-3 tie, but Dundee’s pitch is once again a problem, with Sky Sports also intending to televise the game.

With the Met Office anticipating heavy rain, Dundee has been out spinning the situation, but it’s evident that getting the game on may pose some significant hurdles.

This comes after Dundee’s cabbage patch welcomed Motherwell, who beat the Dee 3-2 over the weekend thanks to a last-gasp comeback.

Dundee managing director John Nelms stated, “The pitch did not look pretty, but it played well (against Motherwell).”

“It was safe underfoot, and the ball rolled and bounced as intended.

“We have done everything we can do to make the pitch playable and, right now, the areas of concern we have covered and have had covered since yesterday.”

What are the Rangers saying?

Rangers manager Philippe Clement expressed unhappiness with the Dundee pitch issue.

The Belgian says that the constant call-offs are unworthy of a top-flight club and that Scottish football as a whole suffers from this exceptional level of tinkering.

The Rangers manager and his team stayed in a hotel last night, but Big Phil is not particularly pleased with the situation.

Philippe Clement stated, “It’s a weird scenario to go to a top league that you don’t know the day before – and we’re going to travel now in half an hour or one hour – but we’re going to travel there and stay there in a hotel, and you don’t know if the game is on tomorrow or not.

“So that’s a very strange circumstance. Okay, it can happen in extreme situations, but I don’t believe it has happened in any of the elite leagues in recent years.

“But now when it’s raining in Scotland there is every time a problem and it’s not that in Scotland normally it’s a lot of sunny days so it’s a bad situation for the league and for Dundee themselves also.”

Scottish Premiership match in peril

Rangers fans making the long trek up to Dundee will have to wait and see.

A pitch inspection is set at 11 a.m., during which match referee Don Robertson will make a decision about the surface.

If it is not declared playable, Rangers will most likely give their players a training session before returning to Glasgow for the weekend’s trip to Ross County.

According to John Nelms, the match might then be shifted to the calendar’s final free week, complicating the situation with the looming Scottish Premiership split.

The Dundee director has recommended that if the game is cancelled, it will be played next week on either the 16th or 17th of the month.
