The new member will replace outgoing club legend Kevin Sheedy.
The Essendon Football Club has announced the appointment of Anthony Howard AM KC to its Board of Directors, filling the vacancy left by outgoing member Kevin Sheedy with his legal and community expertise.
Howard, a former barrister and judge specializing in criminal law, has had a notable career and will assume his new position on October 1, 2024. He retired from the County Court in 2016 and was honored as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019 for his significant contributions to law, the judiciary, and the Victorian community.
From 2015 until June 2023, he was actively involved in community and international initiatives led by his wife, Linda Dessau AC CVO, during her tenure as Governor of Victoria. A lifelong supporter of Essendon, Howard is also the founding Chair of the club’s Lawdons coterie group.
“We’re a great club with a proud history. As a lifelong supporter, I’ve been connected to Essendon since childhood, and I look forward to joining the board and contributing to our future,” Howard stated. “There has been a lot of positive change at the club since President Barham took over two years ago. These changes will help us build a strong foundation for success. It’s been too long since we enjoyed a successful period.”
Howard added, “Our vision as a club extends beyond today, and I’m eager to be a part of that.”
Club President David Barham expressed his enthusiasm about Howard joining the board, highlighting his unique decision-making experience to help elevate Essendon to the standards of successful teams from the past.
“The Essendon Football Club is thrilled to welcome someone of Tony’s caliber,” Barham said. “His extensive legal background and governance skills will be invaluable as we address the challenges faced by football clubs. Tony also brings wide-ranging business experience and community connections that will greatly strengthen our club.”
Barham acknowledged the significant contributions of Kevin Sheedy to the club, thanking him for his service and emphasizing his legendary status among Bomber fans.
