BREAKING NEWS: Everton ‘punished for ambition’ after new stadium update – O’Rourke

Everton are being “punished” for showing ambition after their dispute with the Premier League.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke claimed that the Toffees potentially facing another sanction for failing to repay interest payments on their new ground is “very harsh”

Sources have told Football Insider (14 April) that Everton could be handed their third points deduction or a fine over the unresolved matter regarding the status of the costs for their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

The Merseysiders breached the allowed losses threshold in the three-year period to the 2022-23 season by £16.6million and were hit with a two-point deduction last week (8 April).

However, the club insist that £6.5million of this loss should not be attributable to their profit and sustainability requirements and they should be audited in their stadium accounts – not registered as a loss.

It is believed that a hearing into this matter will take place over the summer and a verdict will be reached at the start of the new season.

The new stadium is set to cost £550million, with prospective new owners 777 Partners reportedly loaning the club upwards of £160million for working capital and for costs for the new venue.

O’Rourke noted that Everton’s primary aim with the new stadium, which is set to seat nearly 53,000 supporters, was to increase matchday income and develop the club, not gain a sporting advantage which PSR rules are there to prevent.
