Breaking News: Ex-Leeds Rhinos player appointed chairman at Championship club

A former Leeds Rhinos player has taken on the role of chairman at a West Yorkshire club.

Paddy Handley, who rose through Leeds’ youth ranks and made two first-team appearances in 1996, has succeeded long-standing chairman Mark Campbell at Betfred Championship side Featherstone Rovers.

Handley, who played 113 games for Rovers between 1997 and 2000, also had stints with York and Doncaster. Now the managing director of PMJ Masonry in York, he joined Rovers’ board two months ago.

Campbell, who had been chairman since 2008, announced his decision to step down earlier this year and has now stepped aside with immediate effect. Director Steven Clough will serve as Handley’s vice-chairman.

In a club statement, Handley expressed his gratitude and commitment to the fans, urging them to continue supporting the club as they have always done. He acknowledged their crucial role in his return to his former club and promised to share some exciting plans for projects aimed at ensuring a bright future for Featherstone in the coming weeks.

He outlined his immediate priorities, which include addressing the current financial challenges faced by the club and exploring unique opportunities to make the most of its substantial land resources. This could involve generating income or developing new facilities that would benefit the club and its community for years to come.

Handley also plans to hold a series of meetings with sponsors, fans, and other key partners to outline his approach and explain how they can help support his vision for Featherstone Rovers’ future.

He expressed his appreciation for Mark Campbell’s long-term efforts at the club, recognizing that while Campbell may not seek praise or recognition, he will likely look back on his tenure with pride. Handley also thanked Steven Clough for his invaluable support in recent years and expressed his gratitude for having Clough’s wise counsel as they work together to move the club forward.

In the same statement, Campbell shared his confidence in Handley and Clough’s leadership, stating that their enthusiasm and dedication would greatly benefit the club. He expressed his belief that they have the motivation and commitment to advance the club’s interests and assured them of his continued support if they ever need his advice.
