The Pompey FA Cup winner thinks his old team has a good chance of placing in the top half of the Championship table the following season.
Glen Johnson, the former Pompey and England right-back, has shared his predictions for the Blues’ performance in the Championship campaign in the upcoming season. He believes it will give the Fratton Park supporters some hope.
Johnson, who signed a permanent contract with Pompey in August 2007 after initially joining on a season-long loan in June 2006, expressed confidence in the team’s Championship triumphs but pointed out one area where they needed to improve.
The former right-back made a significant contribution to the team’s 2008 FA Cup run and, at age 24, Johnson was the youngest player listed in The Times’ “Top 50 Portsmouth Players” in April 2009. After making 99 appearances for the team, he left in June 2009 to join Liverpool at Anfield.
The former Blues defender has now discussed with Betfred how he thinks his old team would fare in the Championship after their dominant League One campaign. The former Liverpool player is optimistic about his team’s performance in England’s second division, but he also points out that the team needs to maintain organisation if they are to outperform “half the teams” in the division. When asked how he believed his previous squad would do, Johnson replied, “To be honest, I think they’ve got a chance.” I wouldn’t be surprised if they were in the top half of that league because all they need to do is be organised and they already outperform half of the other clubs.
“You never know, maybe they can pick up steam in the summer if they sign a few more players and players.” The players will be ecstatic when you walk out like that, and if you’re well-organized, you should already be ahead of half the other teams. When asked if he thought Pompey might make it to the Championship play-offs the following season, the 54-time England international said, “Yes, it definitely wouldn’t surprise me.” It’s a large club, so as long as the players are able to step up and lift the bar a little bit and they have faith in the manager’s intentions, then sure. To them, it’s the first season.
“I believe they’ll accept it if they place in the top half, but there isn’t much between that position and qualifying for the playoffs. Anything is achievable, in my opinion; they only need to be more organised and add a few more elite players to the team.
