Former Barnsley and Cardiff City defender Chris Barker has died at the age of 39.
The Sheffield-born left back accumulated over 500 career appearances since starting his Football League career with Barnsley in 1999.
Barker went on to play for Cardiff, QPR, Plymouth, Southend, and Aldershot, in a career that lasted nearly 20 years.
His management agency, World in Motion, shared the tragic news in a statement:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely and tragic passing of Chris Barker at the age of 39. Chris was a client throughout his remarkable playing career, which included over 500 League games for clubs such as Barnsley, Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers, and Plymouth Argyle.
“Additionally, Chris was a wonderful person, an absolute gentleman, and a pleasure to work with. Rest in peace, Chris Barker.”
His impressive performances for Barnsley led Cardiff to invest £500,000 for his transfer in 2002, where he contributed to their promotion back to the Championship in his first season.
Loan spells at Stoke and Colchester interrupted his time at Ninian Park before he joined QPR on a free transfer in 2007.
Joe Ledley, a former Cardiff teammate, expressed his sorrow on Twitter: “Devastating news to hear about the loss of Chris Barker. My thoughts are with his family and friends. One of the most down-to-earth guys I’ve met. Will be truly missed. Rest in peace, Barks.”
