Jason Kennedy, the former Middlesbrough, Darlington, and Hartlepool United midfielder, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38. Kennedy enjoyed a long career, making over 550 senior appearances across various Football League clubs.
Kennedy began his career in Middlesbrough’s youth system and made his senior debut for the club in April 2005 in a 1-1 draw with Fulham. During his time at Boro, he also featured in the UEFA Cup, playing against teams like Dnipro, Litex Lovech, and Stuttgart. He later had successful spells with Darlington, Rochdale, Bradford City, and Carlisle United, before finishing his playing days with Hartlepool United, Spennymoor Town, and Marske United.
In his retirement announcement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kennedy expressed gratitude to his family, teammates, and fans for supporting him throughout his career, which allowed him to live out his dream and create lasting memories.
Kennedy’s well-travelled career saw him make notable contributions to all the clubs he represented, particularly during his time at Darlington, where he scored six goals in 53 appearances during the 2008-09 season, and at Rochdale, where he enjoyed a lengthy and impactful spell.
