Breaking News: Gary O’Neil admits he’s just ‘desperate’ for £29m Wolves player to stay this summer

In light of recent rumours that one of his key Wolves players may be leaving, Gary O’Neil is emphatic that the player must remain with the team this summer.

Wolves lost to Liverpool at Anfield to end their 2023–24 season.

In the game that served as Jurgen Klopp’s farewell for the Reds, Wanderers fell short 2-0.

The visitors fell behind against Alexis Mac Allister and then Jarell Quansah after Nelson Semedo was sent off. Although it was devastating to lose, considering the circumstances, not many people truly thought Wolves would get anything from the game.

Life became challenging when Semedo was dismissed.

A week after Wolves submitted a motion to eliminate VAR, Gary O’Neil was once more forced to address a contentious ruling involving the Semedo red card.

Originally assigned a yellow, the full-back was later promoted to a red.

However, O’Neil did not place any blame on Semedo, and the manager is convinced that he wants the player to remain with the team over the summer.

Gary O’Neil says he is ‘desperate’ to keep Nelson Semedo who he thinks is ‘massive’ for Wolves

There has been some recent discussion regarding Semedo’s future at Molineux.

His fourth season with the team just ended, and it was his greatest to date.He feels that this has been his greatest season in old gold, and he was chosen as the Players’ Player of the Season.

With one year remaining on his deal, Semedo’s situation always presents challenges for the team.

Being one of the club’s greatest earners, Fosun may consider considering a sale.

But doing so would not sit well with O’Neil, who, following Sunday’s loss to Liverpool, showered Semedo with accolades.

“Nelson Semedo is massive to us, huge,” he stated (via E&S). I really want him to stay for more than a year, so maybe the club can work something out for him.

Nelson is extremely important to us if we’re going to be serious about holding onto our best players and those who, through their play, represent me. He’s had an incredible season. I hope we can hold onto him longer.

Although I haven’t talked to him, I know he is content right now. Though you never know, he claims it’s possibly the best season he’s ever had.

“A football player who aspires to play and achieve at the highest level is one who rings for Real Madrid or Manchester City.

“Aside from such weird stuff, though, I know he enjoys being here. He enjoys working with the staff and being a part of the group. He is aware of our gratitude for all that he does. He wouldn’t be opposed to staying put, in my opinion.

Semedo should be defended by the Wolves.

Given how extensively O’Neil has utilised Semedo in the 2023–24 season, his post-match remarks regarding him are scarcely shocking.

Semedo has made frequent appearances this season and, as compared to previous managers, O’Neil has undoubtedly elevated his game.

Semedo, who paid Wolves an initial £29 million to sign with them, has been connected to leaving the team this summer. Apparently, certain Saudi clubs are interested.

Given that he has experience in the Premier League and is hard to replace, the team ought to try to hang onto the player.

Since O’Neil’s affections for him are rather evident, it is now up to the board to make sure he doesn’t leave this summer. The player might, of course, always turn around and decide he’s had enough. O’Neil will then look for other options and take that on the chin.
