Celtic led the pack by nine points at the time, but Beale, in a backwards way tried to say the gap should only be three points. It was quite the moment for the former Ibrox boss.
“The difference is nine points, but we’ve only played each other once and they won that game, deservedly,” he said. “So, the difference should be three points, shouldn’t it? It should. We are six points behind against the other teams in the league, the other 10 that we play. That is the disappointing thing.” [Rangers Review]
Fast forward to April 2024, and Michael Beale’s successor is giving his own take on things. Phillipe Clement, who watched his side drop five points in the last two SPFL games decided to get his math book out and work out how many points he and Celtic have won in the last six months. The Belgian revealed Rangers have won four more points than the league leaders.
We’re forced to ask, has the Belgian just had his Beale moment?
Rangers were four points behind Celtic with two games in hand a couple of weeks ago, had they won their games in hand, they would have been sitting top of the league by two points. Instead, they are now three points behind Celtic with five games to go. Telling people how many points you have accrued in six months doesn’t mean anything to anybody.
The league table matters, and right now, Clement is sounding more and more like his predecessor. From claiming a moral victory against Celtic in a 3-3 draw to claiming he got a reaction from his players against Dundee which was also a draw.
