BREAKING NEWS: Hatters manager believes ‘excellent’ Luton defender to be future captain material.

Hatters defender labelled a 'top, top performer' by MOTD pundit after starring role in Toffees victory

During Cherries’ victory, striker hailed teammate as a ‘fighter’.
Town manager Rob Edwards has branded centre half Teden Mengi as future captain material after he played a starring role against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 21-year-old joined Luton in August after leaving Manchester United, where he had spent over a decade. Since arriving in Bedfordshire, the centre half has been in excellent form, appearing in 25 top-flight games and averaging 4.6 clearances per game, 1.9 interceptions, 1.8 tackles, and 0.9 blocks, while also earning his maiden England U21s cap.

Mengi started against the Cherries again on Saturday, and it appeared that his afternoon would be cut short twice in the first period, as he fell down holding his knee and needed treatment on both occasions. Following some medical attention, the defender was able to shake off the knocks and resume his efforts to keep the visiting attackers at bay for the full 90 minutes, bursting forward when possible as Town limited the Cherries attacker to long-range shots in their 2-1 victory.

When asked about his performance, Edwards stated, “He’s 21 years old, and he’s improving with each game. It is extremely difficult for a centre back to learn, adjust, and make mistakes while improving in the Premier League. He’s a great man, and he will undoubtedly become a captain in the future.

“I think the fact that he played through pain and performed wonderfully says everything about him. Reece Burke, like Burkey, was missing the other day and had to leave at halftime against Tottenham. So even the fit ones are clinging a little bit right now.”

Skipper Carlton Morris said of his teammate, who has been a major factor for Town’s chances of keeping up this season by staying healthy despite a slew of defensive injuries: “Teden Mengi is an incredible warrior. He falls down twice and could have easily come off, but he displays his heart and determination to continue and play when we needed him the most, which is big.”
