Even though City and Oldham drew 0-0 this afternoon in a good effort, there was bad news when the final whistle blew.
After making his comeback on the last afternoon of the season, fans were eager to see Tyler Walker in the preseason. He looked impressive upon his return, but prior to the friendly match against Preston in Spain last week, he injured his ankle.
He missed the game as a result, and the severity of the injury was made public today. The news is not favorable at all.
Head coach of the Imps Michael Skubala revealed, “Scan has been done, we see a specialist next week. That could be really disappointing how long that could be.”
“It might take as long as three months or longer.”
Walker is therefore unlikely to be seen until Halloween at the latest, which means that by the time he does make a comeback, we will have only had 324 minutes since he signed and 25 minutes total.
Naturally, the player and the club have suffered a great loss, but some of the responses I’ve seen on social media regarding him have surprised me. A football player has not gone out to get hurt, and he has no desire to get hurt. We may have paid him more than we should have, but not many could have predicted the injuries he sustained this summer.
I wrote on Twitter that while some fans applaud the team for their recent humanitarian efforts with Lewis Montsma, I find it difficult to accept that we should sever our relationship with a player who is experiencing a period of inactivity.
Although Tyler Walker’s injury is not ideal, I don’t think it will alter our transfer strategy. We probably would have signed a striker regardless, and we wouldn’t have been compelled to act hastily if we hadn’t.
It’s difficult to accept that a 27-year-old football player, who is a top performer at this level on his best days, is at the center of all of this and is having yet another setback. I know not every fan will agree with me, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if we periodically took a moment to feel sorry for our injured athletes instead of blaming them?
